Description

Sensory Stuff’s Lycra Blindfold can be used to refine motor planning, spatial awareness, and proprioceptive integration. Made from quality, high-stretch Lycra, it delivers gentle pressure input while minimizing visual distractions. The blindfold is effective for Occupational Therapists seeking to enhance a user’s reliance on their body scheme and internal feedback systems.

Motor Skills and Proprioceptive Integration

  • The snug, gentle pressure around the head can be organizing for some children.
  • By removing distracting visual cues, the blindfold forces the user to rely entirely on proprioceptive and vestibular feedback. This strengthens the development of an accurate body scheme and enhances spatial and body awareness. Removing distracting visual cues also allows the user to better attend to auditory, tactile, or proprioceptive tasks helps in refining the function of other sensory systems.

The blindfold may be used in activities to improve the following:

    • Motor Planning (Praxis): Essential for successfully executing novel, complex movements without visual reliance.
    • Balance and Postural Control: Encourages the user to stabilize and adjust posture based on internal sensory data, rather than visual compensation.
    • Vestibular System Challenge: Ideal for use in activities designed to integrate the vestibular and proprioceptive systems (e.g., balance beams, swinging, rotation) by maximizing the sensory challenge.

Sensory Stuff’s Blindfold may also be used to assist Calming and Sensory Modulation

  • Visual Input Reduction: Effectively eliminates distracting or overwhelming visual stimuli. Individuals with cortical blindness and central visual processing issues may also find the use of the blindfold most calming to for short rest periods to eliminate all light.
  • Improved Focus and Attention: The combination of calming deep pressure and reduced visual noise helps individuals down-regulate and achieve a state of calm alertness, leading to improved concentration for therapeutic or learning tasks.

Recommended Applications

  • Vestibular/Proprioceptive Training: To enhance reliance on internal sensory feedback during movement activities.
  • Motor Planning and Praxis: For activities requiring non-visual execution of motor sequences (e.g., obstacle course navigation, manipulating tools).
  • Sensory Modulation/Overload: Providing a regulatory tool to reduce visual overstimulation in busy environments.
  • Body Scheme Development: To challenge and refine the user’s understanding of their body in space.

Made from a high stretch Lycra fabric and adjustable to suite children of all ages.  –  Care: hand or machine wash. Do not tumble dry or iron.

Caution: Since the blindfold obscures vision, it should only be used under the supervision of a therapist or responsible adult.
